DivX Web Player

I found the DivX Web Player mentioned somewhere on the web, and thought it could be interesting to check out. The main idea behind it seems to be that you can stream content without having a special streaming server. All the user needs is the plugin, which works on a range of browsers but not yet on all platforms. All you need is to embed some code in your website/webpage (This code can be generated online) and upload the videos to your web server.

Now why is this plugin necessary with youtube, google videos and all the other services out there? One advantage is control over your content, not that you can protect the files from being downloaded, but you get to keep all your content in one place. Another advantage is the control of quality. The small movie clips I've uploaded to Google Videos doesn't look that smooth in the flash player, and with the DivX player you can provide HD content that can be played in full screen.

Do I really need something like this? Most likely not, as I'm not a content producer, but I liked the idea and the simplicity of the player. Somehow I find it nicer to be able keep content together, so now I just need a better gallery plugin/system so I can move my images from Picasa to my own server.

Here is an example of a video streamed using the DivX Web Player:
